Today Art Museum - 今日美术馆

The Today Art Museum in Beijing, is China's first private, non-profit museum. The museum's mission is to support the development of Chinese contemporary art.
No doubt this is the gravitational centre of the Baiziwan Lu district. Pictures of its post industrial facade, designed by artists Wang Jianwei and Wang Hui, are the poster image of Chinese art development in the city. Yue Minjun's enigmatic statues on the front lawn add to its contemporary appeal. The museum spans four floors of exhibition space – a total of 4,000 square meters of contemporary art. Attached is a café and a creative club. The museum also sponsors loads of activities from kids workshops to arts seminars.

A ways southeast of Guomao subway station is Pingod Art District, one of Beijing's hip destinations that somehow stays under the mainstream radar. Home to Modern Sky Records' headquarters and numerous galleries and design studios, Pingod would be worth a visit even if it didn't have its focal point of the Today Art Museum.

The museum understands the importance of first impressions, and a crew of Yue Minjun's smiling polychrome sculptures announces the importance of this art center. And with metal grilling and walkways slicing into original brick faces, the building itself is an unapologetically modern interpretation of the boiler house it used to be. A row of white figures precariously dangle their legs off of the building's roof.

The Today Art Museum is Beijing's only private museum which focuses exclusively on contemporary art, pushing culture forwards as China concurrently modernizes.
Immediately humorous and sympathetic, Yue Minjun’s paintings offer a light-hearted approach to philosophical enquiry and contemplation of existence. Drawing connotations to the disparate images of the Laughing Buddha and the inane gap toothed grin of Alfred E. Newman, Yue’s self-portraits have been describe by theorist Li Xianting as “a self-ironic response to the spiritual vacuum and folly of modern-day China.”
Often basing his compositions on well known European masterpieces and iconic Chinese art, Yue subverts the grandiose aura of art history through his adaptation of pop aesthetics. Using both the exaggerated expressiveness of cartooning and the stylistic rendering of graphic illustration, Yue depicts his cloned doppelgangers as contorted and grotesque, all scalded pink skin and maniacal toothy cackles.

As both antagonists and anti-heroes, Yue’s hysterical cohorts equally bully the viewer and stand as subjects of ridicule. Using laughter as a denotation of violence and vulnerability, Yue’s paintings balance a zeitgeist of modern day anxiety with an Eastern philosophical ethos, positing the response to the true nature of reality as an endless cynical guffaw.

Here is a list of Artist: Fang Lijun, Xu Bing, Liu Ye, Zhuang Hui& Dan’er, Zhang Qikai, Yan Jun, Wu Jian’an, Chen Xiaowen, Chen Qi, Liu Liping, Wang Yiqiong, Xu Baozhong, Kong Guoqiao, Yang Hongwei, Jiang Miao, Huang Jingyuan, Huang Yang, Shi Xinji, Kou Jianghui, Guo Leilei, Wang Haiyang, Zhou Danmei, Yang Yumin, Xue Guangchen. Bing Tang Hulu (Candied Haw in a Stick)

Though it is so small candy and commonly available in Beijing, it somehow implies a simple, quiet and historical urban lifestyle of natives in Beijing. It is part of their childhood and also part of the history of Beijing City. Bintang Hulu could be a primitive but traditional candy which is made of fresh fruit, particularly wild fruit like hawthorn.

Tanghulu, also called bingtanghulu, is a traditional Chinese snack of candied fruit. It is commonly available in many Chinese cities, such as Beijing,Tianjin, Shanghai, and other Chinese cities. It consists of candied fruits on bamboo skewers that are approximately 20cm long. This snack can be found widely along the Beijing snack street Wangfujing and also there are street vendors who travel from place to place selling it.

The two common names literally means "sugar bottle gourd" and "rock sugar bottle gourd" respectively. The "sugar" or "rock sugar" refers to the sugar coating, while the "bottle gourd" refers to the slight resemblance of the snack to the shape of that fruit.
Tanghulu typically has a hardened sugar coating that comes from dipping the skewer in sugar syrup, but versions can also be found with a second chocolate coating, or sesame sprinkles. Traditionally, the fruit used has been Chinese hawthorn (山楂 shānzhā), but in recent times vendors have also used various other fruits, such as cherry tomatoes, mandarin oranges, strawberries, blueberries, pineapples, kiwifruit, bananas, or grapes.

Duck soup noodle or Duck leg noodle (Chinese: 鸭腿麺线) is a style of serving noodles famous in Malaysia, in particular at Penang hawker centres. Known locally as ak-twee-mee-sua (literally, duck soup noodles), it consists of ingredients such as duck meat in hot soup with mixed herbs and slim white noodles known as mee-sua.

They are selling Duck Drumstick, Chicken Drumstick, Duck Meat, Duck Wing, Pork Rib, Pork Intestine and Pork Knuckle with the choice of mee sua or "Maggi" mee. As far as I know, there are 2 types of noodles to choose from and I think they are selling Chicken Meat as well. But their famous one is Duck Drumstick Mee Sua and Cintan Mee.

If you wish to try out their Duck Drumstick Mee Sua, I would advise you to go earlier because normally, the Duck Drumstick is sold out during lunch time. If you are worry the Duck Meat is hard, rest assured that the meat is very soft and smooth after hours of steaming.

Their Specialty- Chicken French Toast RM 3.90- delicious.

Kuih Bangkit family home in Queen Street Penang

$

Kuih Bangkit is a traditional Nyonya Chinese New Year delicacy. It is a cookie that is hard on the outside but melts away in your mouth. It is made mainly from tapioca flour, eggs and coconut milk. The traditional shape is in oval or circle but to attract the little ones, there are animal figurines like rabbit, chicken imprints and also different shapes. It can be kept for about 2 months if stored in airtight container.

I love kuih bangkit and was so happy to find the location in Queen Street/ Family Home from the Star Newspaper Grandma Cham Ah Moi carefully presses dough into a wooden mould of animal and plant motifs as she makes the kuih bangkit. Her grandaughter Cheah Qiao Hua, 18, helps by putting the dye to dot the “eyes” of the animals, in the shapes of tortoises, fish and roosters.

Cham’s daughter-in-law Tan Ean Ean, 47, prepared the dough, mixing flour with egg yolk, pandan essence and coconut cream before kneading it.“Preparing the kuih bangkit needs a lot of patience and passion to ensure that it’s fragrant and delicious,” said the 83 year old Grandma Cham, who started making traditional cookies for the Chinese New Year celebrations since the age of 12.

Another favourite will be the Honeycomb biscuits or better known in Cantonese as “Matt Fung Dau”. This special looking cookie was named according to its shape and has a special meaning behind it. Chinese said that it symbolises family togetherness.

Grandma Cham, who learnt the art of baking traditional cookies from her mother while growing up in Ipoh, Perak, is proud to stick to the old methods. She bake them over hot charcoal and keeps the cookies fragrant even after they are stored for some period.” Grandma Cham, who passed on her baking skills to Tan some 21 years ago, said the most important step in making the kuih bangkit was the kneading process.

The mother of four said the family also made other traditional Chinese New Year cookies like kuih kapit (love letters), peanut cookies, butter cookies, oat and nestum cookies.
The cookies have been huge favourites among her family members, friends, neighbours and the people over the years. The family made about 4,000 cookies daily.

The cookies are priced between RM17 and RM25 per container, depending on the size and type of cookies. Tan can be contacted at 016-4737208.

How to Resize All Images Automatically in Blogger

$

0
I was so happy to find out this tutorial from Mybloggerlab from now onwards, I don't have to manually edit my photos , it automatically resize the width for me. Instead of 500px, you can change to 600px ... etc. But remember the Height put it as :auto.
Sometimes images of large magnitude flow out of the content this not only disappoint your readers, but also affect your online reputations. Blogger provides basic options for resizing images, but this not a practical approach and does not fit the blogs designs well. Fortunately, a straightforward CSS tweak makes it possible to automatically modify each and every image on your site. In this article, we will show you How to Resize All Images in Blogger?

Resizing pictures one-by-one manually is acceptable, but what you would do, if your site has thousands of photos and screenshots. Will you still edit them manually? Even if you decided to do so it would take months or even more than that. Therefore, it is essential to resize them manually through a straightforward CSS coding. Through this approach, you can also revert the size of images back to their original size.

The First thing you need to do is to go to Blogger.com >> your site >> Template >> Edit HTML. Now within the new Blogger HTML Editor search for the ]]></b:skin> tag and just above it paste the following CSS coding. (Quick Tip: If you are unable to find the skin tag, then first click anywhere on the HTML Editor and Press CTRL+F to operate the built in search option connected to the HTML Editor).

.post-body img {
width: 500px!important;
height: auto!important; }

Now change the values of Width and height, according to your needs. You can even add a border to your images through (border: 1px solid #d2d2d2) a modest border CSS command. After customizing, press the “Save Template” button and that’s all.

Reunion Dinner at home

$
0
0

Chinese people from all corners of the world celebrate the Chinese New Year or the Spring Festival according to the Lunar Calendar. Therefore, the lunar New Year's Eve and New Year's Day are as important as Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in western countries.

In China, there are different ways to celebrate the Spring Festival as people stick to various local traditions. But a reunion dinner is a must for everyone on Chinese New Year's Eve.
The reunion dinner on the eve of the Lunar New Year is like a magnet that draws all the family members back home. Reunion dinner is less of a ceremony and more of a promise that the family will once again unite despite their work and studies outside.

What is culture? Are they important to you? Many of us do not think that traditions are as important as why it is called tradition anymore. Why I say so is because of the changing and modern world we live in. If you look around you would realize there are many families who are engross into the modernization and technological world we live in. At the dinner table you would see that the kids staring into their ipod, ipad and iphone, parents could be staring at their ipad and on the phone too.

Do you still hold a gathering for everyone around for dinner on Lunar New Year Eve, be it in their homes or in a fancy restaurant. These days, most opt for eating out given the lavish spread restaurants and hotels offer and - more importantly - the convenience of it all. Eating out means no need to plan the menu which entails striking the right balance between observing the traditions of generations past and the culinary delights of today.

Furthermore cooking for a big gathering can be very taxing. And the best part is, eating out means there will be no dishes to do after the big makan. Nevertheless, some feel there is a certain appeal about having everyone gather at the diner table in one's own home.
In every culture, tradition is different. That is why it is important to pass down your cultures to the next generation and teach them the values that has been passed down from generation to generations.

The capital of Catalonia is uniquely diverse. Each district tells a story, making the urge to explore unavoidable. On short visits, a bus tour is an excellent way to see the sights, but many can be seen on foot.

Although Barcelona is the second most populous city in Spain after Madrid, visitors flock to the coastal Mediterranean city in large numbers. Whether you’re looking to relax in some of the city’s many famous parks and beaches, revel in Barcelona’s illustrious club scene, or indulge in Spanish food and drink, Barcelona weekend breaks are a great way to participate in some of Barcelona’s many leisure activities.

Las Arenas faces the Plaça D'Espanya, which was built for the Barcelona Exhibition of 1929. Behind it is the Parc de Joan Miró, formerly the location of the bullring's abattoir

The Arenas (Arenes in Catalan) was built between 1889 and 1900 as the Plaça de Toros de les Arenes, the bullring of Barcelona. It was designed by the Catalan architect August Font i Carreras in a Moorish style with a monumental horseshoe shaped entrance decorated with colorful tiles.
The arena, which has a diameter of 52 meters (171 ft), could seat up to 16,000 spectators. Besides bullfights, the arena also played host to a number of concerts; the Beatles even performed here in 1966.Bullfighting never really caught on in Catalonia and the last bullfight took place here on June 9, 1977, Interior of the Arenas de Barcelona Inside the Arenas, leaving the Plaza de Toros Monumental as the only bullfighting arena in Barcelona. But even that arena closed in early 2012 when a bullfighting ban went into effect in Catalonia.
For decades, the arenas de Barcelona stood empty and it took until 1999 before plans were launched to turn the arena into a modern shopping and entertainment center. The architectural firm of Richard Rogers was selected to design a state of the art complex, while conserving the historic red brick structure.

Palau Nacional
One of these sights is the Palau Nacional (National Palace), originally built as the central pavilion for the International Exhibition. The majestic building in neo-Baroque style is home to the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC). Its collection includes Roman, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque art as well as 19th and 20th century works of art.

Plaça Espanya is a lovely plaza just out of the centre of town, where many of the main roads in Barcelona, such as Gran Via and Parallel intersect. It is also home to Barcelona's old bull-fighting ring which is now nothing but a shell, albeit quite a beautiful one.The main draw to Plaça Espanya is the Palau Nacional which is the Museum of Catalan art, stands regally up on the side of Montjuïc. It's stunning and there is never a better time to see it than when it is lit up at night with the Magic Fountain in front. The Magic Fountain is a free music and light show based around the fountains and takes place from.

The Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium was built for the 1929 International Exhibition. It was refurbished for the 1992 Olympic Games and occupies a privileged place in the memories of the people of Barcelona.
The stadium opened on 20th May 1929 with a football match during which a Catalan squad beat the English team Bolton Wanderers 4-0. This major sporting facility was used until the 1955 Mediterranean Games, after which it entered a state of decline. When the International Olympic Committee chose Barcelona to host the 1992 Olympic Games, a team of architects made up of Vittorio Gregotti, Frederic Correa, Alfons Milà, Joan Margarit and Carles Buxadé, was commissioned to completely refurbish the stadium. The outer walls were preserved but new stands were built inside, seating up to 54,000 people.

Barcelona Olympic Cauldron 1992

It will be hard for any host to compete with Barcelona's unique way of lighting the Olympic flame at the 1992 opening ceremony. The stadium was plunged into almost total darkness as Spanish basketball star Juan Antonio San Epifanio ran the torch through the gathered athletes to where Paralympic archer Antonio Rebollo was waiting.Rebollo lit one of his arrows and fired it across the stadium and over the Olympic cauldron to spectacularly light the flame.

Sardana Monument, Montjuïc

Sardana Dance Statuary located within Parc de Montjuïc dedicated to celebrate typical dance genre performed especially by the Catalonia community. The sardana is a type of circle dance typical of Catalonia, Spain. The dance was originally from the Empordà region, but started gaining popularity throughout Catalonia during the 20th century. People join hands and dance in a circle in sync with the drum taps. The Sardana Dance Statuary is dedicated to celebrate this form of dance. It was created in 1966 by Josep Cañas. Mannequins dressed up in traditional gear against the back drop of well manicured and lush green lawns, makes a pretty picture. Located within the Parc de Montjuïc, it truly represents the ancient dance form.

The Christopher Columbus Monument was built in 1888 in honor of the renowned explorer and discoverer of America. It consists of a statue of Columbus standing on a tall column.
Statue of Christopher Columbus, Barcelona
The monumental cast-iron column stands in the middle of the Plaça de la Porta de Pau (Square of the Gate of Peace). It is set on a stone pedestal sumptuously decorated with statues. The statue of Columbus atop the sixty meter tall column (197 ft) overlooks the sea from its elevated position and is visible from afar. The monument, locally known as the Monument a Colom, was designed by the Catalan architect Gaietà Buigas i Monravà for the Universal exhibition of 1888. Construction of the monument started in 1882 but due to financial problems it was only completed just in time for the exhibition.

The Chinese New Year holidays might be over, but the celebrations still continue as thousands of people observe Thnee Kong Seh (Jade Emperor's Birthday) last Monday night at the Chew Jetty in Pengkalan Weld here. The celebration, which kicked off on the night of the eighth day of the lunar new year. As usual, visitors were fascinated by the many offerings presented to the Jade Emperor that were laid out on a 20-metre long table by the road.

The turtle buns are actually Chinese steamed buns, shaped into turtles of every size and covered with a coloured layer of pink or yellow. You can pay more for your turtles to be sculpted into fancier displays or have auspicious characters written on their backs (like the turtle family above).

Some will also buy a large number of small turtles, all stacked up as a small ‘mountain’, as an offering to the gods and a food donation to the temple. Aside being a sign of longevity, these hong gwai (‘red turtle’) appear to relate to a legend of a giant red turtle who came to the rescue of the Nine Emperor Gods and ferried them to safety on Tow Boo Keong island.

Among the offerings were huge thnee kong poh (folded gold-coloured paper in pineapple shapes), mee koo (red buns), ang koo (red glutinous rice cakes), huat kueh (pink steamed rice cakes), bi koh (sweet glutinous rice), ngo siew th'ng (pink pagoda-shaped candy), roast pigs and fruits.

Taoism is the ancient indigenous religion of China. Its ideas were first propagated and written by the Shang Dynasty philosopher, Laozhi, 2500 years ago. Taoism gave the world concepts of ying and yang. Taoists believe in the importance of harmony between people, and between human and nature. In addition to the philosophy of life and death as well as morality and nature, an extensive an extensive pantheon of gods and demigods exists in Taoism.

The Sect of the Jiu Wang Yeh is dedicated to the nine sons of Tien Hou or Queen of Heaven (also known as Tou Mu, the Goddess of the North Star), believed to be in control of the Books of Life and Death. Her nine sons, known as the Nine Emperor Gods, are worshipped as patrons of prosperity, wealth and good health on their own right, especially in Fujian and Guangdong Provinces in southern China, a region also known for its ancient sacred rites of spirit mediumship. Worshippers of Jiu Hwang Yeh Sect believe that the Nine Emperor Gods visit the worshippers every year on this day for nine days, and during the duration of the visit, the Gods have to be entertained with traditional opera and dances.

Mee koo was made of flour, yeast and vanilla flavouring without any preservatives. After mixing the ingredients, it is kneaded and moulded, and then left for an hour for the yeast to rise before being steamed for 30 minutes.

It is also an occasion to declare one’s religious devotion and piety so that wishes and favours would be granted for the coming year. The festival is celebrated over the first nine days of the ninth moon in the Chinese lunar calendar. Devotees flock to the temples throughout the country for this religious festival. On the eve of the ninth moon, temples of the Deities hold a ceremony to invoke and welcome the ‘Jiu Hwang Yeh’. Since the arrival of the Nine Emperor Gods is believed to be through the waterways, processions are held from temples to the sea-shore or river to symbolise this belief.

On the eve of the Jade Emperor’s birthday itself, sales could exceed 1,000 per day

Devotees dressed in traditional white, carrying joss-sticks and candles await the arrival of their “Excellencies”. A carnival-like atmosphere pervades the temple throughout the nine-day festival. During this period of time, the constant chiming of a prayer bell and chants from the temple priests are heard. Most devotees stay at the temple, take vegetarian meals and recite continuous chanting of prayers. A procession to send the Nine Emperor Gods home then takes place to complete the rites of this religious festival. To welcome the Nine Emperors, mediums wielding axes and swords will perform evening rituals on odd numbered days. The spirits of the gods are entertained in the temple grounds with Chinese opera performances and fire-walking sessions.

On the eve of the Jade Emperor’s birthday itself, sales could exceed 1,000 per day. I also have customers who ordered as many as 300 buns.

The Nine Emperors are the Chinese version of Robin Hood, who during the Qing dynasty robbed the rich and gave to the poor. According to legend, they were cornered at a seaside by soldiers, but a giant red turtle came to their rescue and ferried them to safety on Tow Boo Keong Island.

The mee koo can be kept for up to two weeks in the refrigerator and a month in the freezer. The longevity bun (sou-tao) which comes with two types of filing of either lotus or peanut.
The buns are priced at RM2.60 (small) and RM5 (big) with 10 sen to 20 sen being added to have the Chinese characters ping an (peace) or shou (longevity) inscribed. Some mee koo can be as expensive as RM180 each as it is intricately decorated with small tortoises to symbolise many children.

The steamed buns are also shaped as sau tou (longevity peaches), with pandan (screwpine, my favourite!) fillings in the yellow ones and lotus paste fillings in the pink. All peach and turtle buns are either donated to the temple or brought home for eating. My parents will peel off the coloured layer and re-steam the buns in our rice cooker. While we can eat the peach buns on their own after steaming, the turtle buns are plain with no filling so we’ll usually enjoy these slathered with plenty of kaya or jam.

Steaming hot mee koo (pink-coloured tortoise-shaped buns) on sale at a biscuit shop in Lorong Selamat are being snatched up as soon as they come out of the oven.

Flappy Bird - The world's most downloaded game

$

The world’s most downloaded game can be downloaded no more. This past weekend, 29-year-old Vietnamese game designer Dong Nguyen removed Flappy Bird from app stores, tweeting, “I cannot take this anymore.” The 50 million people who had already downloaded the improbable smash hit can still play it on their phones. The rest of the world’s billions will never know the exquisite frustration of fatally bonking the titular avian’s pixelated yellow head on a pixelated green pipe.

The game’s spectacular ascent and abrupt demise have left questions floating like feathers in their wake. Who is Dong Nguyen? What, exactly, was it that he could no longer take? And, most puzzlingly of all, what made his distinctly amateurish game so wildly popular in the first place?
Obscure when it launched last May, the game soared to ubiquity over the winter for reasons that remain opaque. By the first week of February, it had achieved heights previously touched only by major franchises like Candy Crush and Angry Birds. Not only was Flappy Bird by far the No. 1 free app on both the iPhone and Android app stores, but blatant rip-offs like Flappy Plane, Fly Birdie, and Ironpants bestrewed the top 50. Nguyen, the game’s creator, says he coded it over the course of a few nights after coming home from work. By last week, he told The Verge he was raking in $50,000 a day.

Flappy Bird may have disappeared from the App Store and Google Play, but you can still get the game for some devices.
iPhone / iPad

If you downloaded Flappy Bird before it was removed from the App Store and then deleted it from your device, it's easy to get it back. Simply go to the App Store, and tap on Purchases (if on an iPad) or Updates > Purchased on an iPhone.
Look for Flappy Bird in the list, and tap the download icon, which looks like a cloud with a downward arrow.

If you didn't install Flappy Bird, there's still a possibility you can get it. If you know someone who got Flappy Bird before it disappeared, you can ask them to sign in with their Apple ID on your device and install Flappy Bird from their purchase history. (To comply with Apple's rules, this person should be a member of your household.)
There are several other ways to get Flappy Bird on an iPhone or iPad, at Macworld:

Flappy Bird is the hottest game on the App Store — at least for the moment — and topmost on every gamer's mind is how to get a higher score than their friends... and without smashing their phone to pieces in the process. A fantastically terrible game, its design is derivative, its mechanics maddening, and its popularity no doubt the result of incredible rage-of-mouth marketing. Yet despite all of that (or maybe because of it)... Can't. Stop. Playing. So how can you get better at Flappy Bird faster? Flappy Bird supposedly spread like an ant farm because it is so simple, yet impossible to beat. People were telling their friends to try and “beat” the game because it looked easy, but in reality it isn’t.

Market Street (Lebuh Pasar) - Little India Penang Part 2

Little India is an ethnic enclave in George Town on the Malaysian island of Penang. Penang had been one of the British-ruled Straits Settlements, along with Singapore and Malacca, and became part of the Malayan Union in 1946 and was in turn succeeded by the Federation of Malaya in 1948 and, today, Malaysia. Penang’s British rulers had imported Chinese and Indian immigrants and used the immigrants’ skills and labor to develop the labor-intensive economy of the Settlements and other locales in Malaya.

Other Indians came on their own to seek their fortunes in Penang’s booming economic development as a free-trade port. Penang’s Indian immigrants, mostly ethnic Tamil and Muslim, settled in an urban area known eventually as ”Little India,” named for a similar enclave in Singapore. The area is very much alive and very important in the identification of Penang’s citizens of Indian origin.

[The REAL Kacang Putih. Seldom seen on the racks nowadays, the beans are roasted lightly without oil or salt. The flavours come from the natural characteristics of the very tiny beans.]

Not many visitors and tourists to Georgetown's famous Little India enclave know that the area's name was adopted by the local authorities only nine years ago. But whatever it is named, visitors hardly fail to sense the remarkable nostalgic charm and almost innocent simplicity of the area. And no wonder. Little India breathes a rich living history that spans over two centuries. Culture here throbs with antiquity and tradition. The area has now become a magnet for heritage enthusiasts, international conservationists, and tourists.

Little India, with its intriguing inner city surroundings that comprise a copious collection of historic attractions of the colonial era such as a 19th century fort, courthouse, church, mosques, Hindu temples, and Chinese clan enclaves, entices a great deal of fascination and interest. To the hundreds of residents and workers who play here, the area bears a simple unspoken homeliness. For the people of Little India, the charming area has always been very much a part of their lives.

The dynamism of the different trades renders a fascinating cornucopia of living activity depicting a rich, unique Malaysian culture. Music stores blare movie songs in Hindi and Tamil next to shops bedecked with flowing silk sarees. Rows of pre-war terrace shophouses teem with seemingly everything Indian - from pottery and stainless steel cutlery to spices and sundries, from jewellery to flower garlands.
Kacang Putih (peanuts and snacks) hawker in Little India, Georgetown.

There are barbers and astrologers, millers and grocers, money changers and fruit sellers, South Indian restaurants and herb dealers. The sheer colour, vestige and energy make the community stand in romantic defiance against the waves of industrialisation and development that have swept through most parts of Penang over the years.

One of the most imposing landmarks in the area is the 167-year-old Sri Mahamariamman Temple in Queen Street, probably better known for the scores of fluttering pigeons that flock its entrance than for the fact that it is Penang island's first Hindu temple. Tucked away at a quiet corner of Little India, the temple's ornate sculptures depicting Hindu gods and mythology, and its peculiar solitude lend it an instant, poignant air of solace. The area is also a photographer’s dream, and there are picture opportunities at every turn.

Yokohama Stadium

Located in Naka ward. A short walk from Chinatown or Kannai station, this is probably one of the most fun places to watch a baseball game in Japan. Known as the Bay Stars Stadium, the Yokohama Baseball Team of the Central League, the Stadium itself was built on the remains of the Cricket Ballpark of the last century for the British delegation. The Bay Stars Stadium is an open roof stadium with natural grass, very rare in Japan, which prefers to man-made grass to save on costs, and the entertainment boasted throughout the games is trying hard, and doing a good job, by Japanese terms, in trying to have each game hosted at the "home ground" to be as American as possible.

Yokohama is famous for being the port where Matthew Perry (the admiral, not the actor) landed in 1854 in what turned out to be a successful attempt to open Japan to the world. A century and a half later, the most important American export continues to thrive here, as the Yokohama BayStars do battle in the Central League, one of two circuits that comprise Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB).

Before delving into the local stadium, a bit of background on Japanese baseball is warranted. There are some similarities to the structure of the American game such as having two leagues (6 teams in each, Pacific with the DH, Central without), interleague play, and three playoff rounds. But there are just as many differences: tie games are called after 12 innings, there is no minor league development system (each team has just one junior squad), and teams have at least one day off per week.

There is only one seating bowl here with nine seating options that are mostly described by letters. SS seats are the best, following by S, FA (field level A), FB, A and B; the other three options are unreserved infield and outfield seats and well as two sections of reserved seats in the outfield. The structure of the stadium is unique, with the field level seats being quite flat and facing second base rather than home plate, but the other seats in the infield rise very steeply and offer great views of the field and beyond.
Tickets here can be expensive, going as high as 6,500 yen ($80) for the SS seats, which are the dark blue box seats that come complete with drink holders. These seats provide an excellent visual contrast from the old and uncomfortable orange chairs that make up the rest of the seating bowl, but they are a bit much for a Japanese baseball game. The remaining seats range from 5,500 yen for the field level seats between home plate and the bases down to 1,800 yen for the unreserved outfield seats. The best value in my mind are the 3,500 yen B seats, which are the upper level between home and the bases. On a hot day, a breeze blows through that doesn't reach the lower parts of the bowl but keeps you refreshed if you are sitting up high. The field is artificial turf, except for the areas around home plate and the bases, which are dirt. The infield area is colored brown but the underlying material is the same, so there are no funny bounces.

If you are a baseball lover and have been captivated over the years by the magical performances of Nomo, Matsui, and Ichiro, then you should definitely set aside an evening during your stay in Japan (April-September) to catch a Yokohama Bay Stars night game at Yokohama Stadium.

Built in 1978 as the first multi-purpose circular stadium that holds 30,000 spectators.

Yong Tau Fu Restaurant @ The One Tingkat Mahsuri 5, Bayan Lepas

Yong Tau Foo originated in the 1960s, and is basically tofu stuffed with fish or pork paste. Meaning “stuffed bean curd”, this dish can be easily found in Malaysia and Singapore. Today, Yong Tau Foo comprises of a variety of food items stuffed with fish paste, such as chilli, lady’s finger, bean curd, bitter gourd, mushroom, tofu skin and eggplant. These food items can also be bought pre-prepared at local supermarkets and wet markets.

The Yong Tau Fu seller will have wide selection of items you can pick and normally it goes about $4.50 (Malaysian dollars) for 7 items and anything in addition to that cost about $0.70 - $1.50each. You can have it with a bowl of rice or rice noodles, etc.

Yong Tau Fu is something that I ate very often. It is a very common food everywhere around the hawker center. It is easy to make and can be healthy too (if you don’t choose a lot of the deep-fried item). Common items in yong tau fu is tofu and bean curd stuffed with meat paste or fish paste, but it is not limited to just tofu and bean curd. Almost anything can be stuffed with meat. I stuffed the big red chili pepper and the bitter gourd with meat, these are the two items I must have to fulfill the definition of eating Yong Tau Fu

Rice embellished with mushrooms, garlic. My family loves this recipe!

The fried stuff are not very oily so you won’t feel guilty after eating 。Chui-chui pok (deep fried beancurd sheets) is highly recommended! Crispy and the slightest tinge of saltiness to spur your appetite.

Seriously anything fried tastes awesome! I'm sure all of you agree with me.

There are a wide variety of ingredients to choose from that include your regular fried Yong Tau Foo ingredients like fish cakes, fish/meat balls and tofu however there are some of the usual steamed ingredients but whats different about this stall is that eventually, everything is deep fried before its served to you. Its a nice touch and makes it all quite delicious with the gravy.

The fish paste is traditionally made by beating fish meat, usually Ikan Parang (Wolf Herring) or Ikan Tengerri (Spanish Mackerel), with a mortar and pestle into a sticky white paste. Good Yong Tau Foo is often characterised as having a tender and bouncy fish paste filling. Deep fried items such as dough fritters, dumplings and Ngo Hiang (fried meat roll) are also offered.

To accompany your yong tau foo, you can order noodles or rice.

Either served dry or in a soup, you can have it with a choice of rice, egg noodles or vermicelli. This clear soup, which is also used to cook the items in, is usually made with soy beans and Ikan Billis (dried anchovies), and has a light and fragrant aroma. To accommodate to local tastes, certain stalls also offer Laksa (Peranakan spicy soup) or curry options. Chilli and sweet bean sauce, as well as sesame seeds, are some of the essential accompaniments when eating Yong Tau Foo.

The deep fried items are tasty, especially dipped with the chilli sauce and black sweet sauce

A Malaysian version of this Hakka dish, Ampang Yong Tau Foo, is also popular in Singapore. Served dry, the ingredients are either steamed or braised slowly, adding a unique savoury touch. Well-known Hakka Yong Tau Foo stalls in Singapore include Goldhill Hakka Restaurant along Changi Road and Rong Xin Cooked Food at Tanjong Pagar Market and Food Centre. So if you’re looking for a healthy option at the food centre, be sure to order some Yong Tau Foo.

Yong Tau Fu is normally serve with a clear broth or you can have it dry. If you have it dry, they are serve with hoisin sauce and chili sauce. Some seller have the curry gravy , or tom yam with addition of $1.00 - $2.00 or something like that.I just love picking out what I want to put in my dish .

Overall tasty food.

Kaffa Espresso Bar @ Green Hall

Coffee is the world’s second most traded commodity. Some like it, some love it, some live for it. Not surprisingly, Penang - like the rest of the world - can't get enough of the stuff. But the tricky thing with coffee is knowing where the good beans lie. There is nothing worse that a bitter, burnt blend.

Kaffa Espresso Bar, a Kuala Lumpur based vintage themed coffee bar, today launched its second outlet in Penang. The bar also unveiled its art gallery, featuring an art collection by Rofizano Zaino (Rofi) along with a demonstration of the art of coffee cupping, showcased by Coffee Sommelier, Claudio Pinto from Italy.

Speaking at the launch event, Dr. Darren Ng, Group Managing Director of Kaffa Espresso Bar said, “Most people perceive an espresso bar as just another coffee place with a cool name. However, it is so much more than that. It is the distinct yet subtle concept of the connection between coffee and art behind it that gives it the wow factor.”

“Since coffee beans embody tell-tale flavours from the region where they were grown, cuppers can attempt to identify the coffee’s origin,” said Pinto.

If you ask someone out for a coffee, the chance of them suggesting Kaffa as the location is high. You'll find an interesting mix of people getting about at Kaffa. Plus, it has a cozy, dimly lit café/restaurant out the back for when you’re looking to sit and enjoy a warm beverage in style.

Rofi, a graphic designer and self-taught painter has also been featured in the inaugural Singapore Art Exhibition at the Singapore Art Museum.

Rofi enjoys painting faces and figures. More than mere portraits, the faces in his paintings are metaphors for personifying issues relating to identity, society, spirituality and sociopolitical affairs. In the Asian world, the concept of face embodies dignity, honour and reputation. By extension, the face idiomatically conveys a map of one’s life.

The art gallery, aptly named ‘The Imaginarium’, is a 700 square feet space which opened its doors with an art exhibition titled ‘Psyche’ by renowned international artist, Rofi, who has had his work showcased in many major cities around the globe such as New York, Amsterdam, Shanghai and many more.

If the eyes are a window to one’s soul, then the expression, the smile, the slight twitch of the nose, the hair casting a shadow – the symmetry or lack thereof – does more to reveal the lives and stories within, going beyond face value.
In this show, Rofi embarks on a psychological study of the face. He paints faces of people caught in a myriad of circumstances, metaphorically conveying a man struggling in stormy seas, a society oppressed, a woman empowered and the courage of a community.

What Is Media.net?
Like AdSense, Media.net is a contextual advertising company – what this means is that the ads displayed on your website are influenced by the actual content on the page, so that visitors will see relevant advertisements.
Also, like AdSense, Media.net pays you for each click, and the amount is based on the bidding of the advertisers (so as you would expect, more competitive niches will yield higher earnings per click).

Different Types of Ads
Just as AdSense has its regular ad units and its link units, Media.net offers a few different types of ad styles. Note: Media.net only allows you one of each ad type per page.
Content Ads– These are your standard contextual block ads, and you can choose from a variety of sizes. They don’t have as many size choices as AdSense, but all of the more popular sizes are there. This is the type of ad that I have implemented on all of my niche sites that currently utilize Media.net, and from what I’ve heard, this type pays better than the others.
Search Targeting Ads– These ads actually look the same as the content ads, with one big exception: they are shown to search engine traffic only, and the content of the ad is tied directly to the visitor’s search query. As you can see, this allows very relevant ads to be displayed to organic traffic, although I’ve heard these ads don’t pay as well as the content ads. I don’t have enough data personally yet to confirm or deny this.
Web Bar– This is an ad unit similar to AdSense’s horizontal link units, except that it’s placed at the bottom of the screen and is “sticky” to remain above the fold as the user scrolls down the page. I’ve never been a fan of these types of ads since I think they look too spammy, so I have yet to try this one.
Mobile Ads - These ads are simply optimized for mobile viewing. To be honest, I have yet to jump on the “mobile” bandwagon (no pun intended) when it comes to internet marketing. I know it’s where the future is trending, but for right now, it’s not a focus of mine.

Good about Media.net
1) Decent earnings per click
This is obviously going to vary by niche, but in my past month of testing Media.net on a small handful of sites, Media.net’s CPC seems to be very similar to AdSense’s. This is probably the biggest reason why Media.net stands out among many other contextual advertising alternatives. Obviously, there are many I haven’t tried yet, but this is my early impression.
2) Ads appear to be very “clickable”
Media.net’s algorithm for determining relevant ads with your content seems to be very strong, and the design of the ads are such that they look like part of your site’s navigation.
I think the average internet user is so used to seeing AdSense-style ads that many have become blind to them. Media.net’s ad style, while nothing spectacular, is somewhat refreshing after seeing a million different AdSense ads. Here’s an example from the sidebar of one of my sites in the pet niche (I’ve blocked out any identifying information from the site):
As you can see, the ads aren’t “in your face” advertisements. There is a small snippet of text (which isn’t visible in this screen shot) at the bottom which indicates that this is an ad block, however it’s not very intrusive.
3) Friendly support
This is absolutely unheard of with Google, so I found this to be a huge positive with Media.net. When you create an account, you’re assigned an account manager.
I had one instance where one of my niche sites was denied for Media.net ads (more on this below). I contacted the account manager to find out why, and what I can do to get the site approved, and he replied fairly quickly with some helpful information. He told me once I make the necessary changes, I can re-submit the site for approval.
Do you think anyone at Google would ever take the time to help with something like this? I highly doubt it. - Article by my4hrworkweek

The difference between brown rice and white rice is not just color! A whole grain of rice has several layers. Only the outermost layer, the hull, is removed to produce what we call brown rice. This process is the least damaging to the nutritional value of the rice and avoids the unnecessary loss of nutrients that occurs with further processing. If brown rice is further milled to remove the bran and most of the germ layer, the result is a whiter rice, but also a rice that has lost many more nutrients. At this point, however, the rice is still unpolished, and it takes polishing to produce the white rice we are used to seeing. Polishing removes the aleurone layer of the grain--a layer filled with health-supportive, essential fats. Because these fats, once exposed to air by the refining process, are highly susceptible to oxidation, this layer is removed to extend the shelf life of the product. The resulting white rice is simply a refined starch that is largely bereft of its original nutrients.

Any great restaurant is about more than the food – it has to have great front-of-house too. Even a simple “please” or “thank you” seemed alien to some of our young candidates, and if you don’t have simple courtesy, it’s difficult to provide any level of service at all. It takes a very special kind of person to work in front-of-house. A good waiter has to be so many things all at once; efficient and speedy, but also precise; attentive, and it’s not good enough for a waiter simply to take an order and bring the food to the table. They should be knowledgeable about what they’re serving, know their menu inside out, and work as a team player with the kitchen. They need to be able to sell - with confidence - glad to say that we found all these qualities in this restaurant.
